HONNING

The Name

The name, which means “honey” in Danish (and is pronounced similarly), is inspired by the industriousness and mystique of the honeybee. The inner workings of bee colonies are a longtime fascination of Creative Director Bridgette Buckley, matched only by her appreciation of Danish design and culture. Throughout her long career, Buckley has always returned to nature as a reference to study systems, shapes, and lines drawn in space which she applies, sometimes subtly, into her Scandinavian-influenced designs. The name is an homage to how the hive is conducted: resourcefully, with all parts working together toward a greater whole. In HONNING’s case, it’s the practice of designing and manufacturing products that are refined, beautiful, and crafted to endure beyond our lifetime.

The Legacy

The company was originally founded in 1998 by Maxine Snider, who built a fascinating collection of modern pieces for her eponymous firm. With artisanal details that nod to the Shakers, the French modernists, and the great Scandinavian designers, Snider’s furniture collections reflect her diverse studio practice and elegant design evolution. In 2019, Snider sold her company to Buckley and transitioned into a mentor role.

The Evolution

In 2023, in honor of the company's 25th anniversary and the next generation of craftsmanship, Maxine Snider Inc. was renamed HONNING to commemorate its augmented role as a steward of multiple collections and voices. HONNING currently manufactures the work of two distinct designers: Maxine Snider, featuring original designs by the company’s founder; and those designed exclusively for HONNING by Bridgette Buckley.
